ST. MARYS CATHEDRAL

St Mary's Cathedral, the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Perth, stands atop a hill in East Perth's Victoria Square. Originally built in 1865, the cathedral underwent significant expansion in the 1920s with plans for a larger Gothic structure. However, the Great Depression halted construction, leaving a new transept and sanctuary attached to the original aisle. After 70 years unfinished and in need of repair, funds were raised in the late 1990s for completion. A modern curved design, featuring a second spire and underground parish centre, was added, and the expanded cathedral reopened in 2009. It remains open daily for prayer and reflection.
